When you live in Arizona you quickly learn that scorpions are dangerous. The Arizona bark scorpion is one of the most dangerous scorpions you can come across, making residents of Arizona very familiar with the dangers of scorpions. The interesting thing is, not all scorpions are dangerous. In fact, the high majority of scorpions are not going to harm you and their venom is not poisonous. How many scorpions are dangerous? There are about 1500 different species of scorpions that are known. However, it is likely that there are at least another 1000 that we haven’t identified yet. There are about 75 of these species that live in the United States. While scorpions do live in many different climates and habitats, the scorpions that are in the United States almost all live in the Southwestern side of the country. The dry, hot climate makes a great home for them here. Of the 75 types of scorpions that live inside of the United States, the Arizona bark scorpion is the most dangerous type that you can run into. We have covered the bark scorpion in other blogs so feel free to go look up how you can handle a bark scorpion and how you should take care of it if you do happen to be stung by one. What should I do if I am stung? If you are stung by a scorpion you should quickly try and determine what type of scorpion it is that stung you. Some quick google searching should let you know if the venom from the scorpion is going to be problematic. If it is not a dangerous scorpion you should wash the area well and watch for any swelling or travelling pain. It isn’t a good idea to put ice on the spot as it will numb the area and you will not be able to watch for the pain travelling.
If you have a small child that was stung by the scorpion you should watch them closely as children under 10 years old are more at risk for problems from a scorpion sting. If they have any trouble breathing or pains in the chest you need to take them to a hospital immediately as the venom many be dangerous for them and causing a reaction. Overall, most of the scorpions that you come across are not going to be harmful to you if you happen to be stung by them. However, if you live in an area with scorpions is doesn’t hurt to do your research to learn about which types may live in your area in case you do happen to be stung or someone you are with does. Understanding the type of scorpions is really important in order to remain calm and deal with the stinging pain.

I find it alarming how scorpions are poisonous pests that could sting you if you're not careful. It does make sense to find someone who could remove these from your home before they cause havoc to your loved ones! I should keep this in mind if I end up seeing one after I move in the countryside.
